Al Gore is coming to the Grenelle

Nobel Peace Prize winners Al Gore and Wangari Maathai of Kenya will attend the final wrap-up of the Grenelle on the environment here in Paris on Thursday, along with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso. “The Grenelle of the Environment is a first in terms of its ambition, its innovative method and the diversity of those taking part,” said David Martinon, spokesman for the French presidency. “The president wishes France to become an example at the international level for ecological challenges.” Starting Wednesday, President Nicolas Sarkozy will meet with the working groups from the Grenelle, who will deliver their conclusions. Martinon added that the Elysée presidential palace will take part in an appeal from NGOs grouped under the Alliance pour la planète to turn out the lights tonight from 1955 to 2000. “On the eve of the final phase of the Grenelle, this symbolic gesture will raise awareness among citizens on the need to save electricity to fight climate change,” he said.
